Christmas Lights Company
Christmas Lights have been part of Stratford for more than 30 years and are recognised as being amongst the best in the country with visitors arriving from all over Britain to see them.
An intrinsic part of the Stratford-upon-Avon Christmas Festival, they enhance the town’s late night shopping events and Christmas markets making the town a magical place to be and make a major contribution to the town’s economy which benefits both businesses and townspeople alike.
The lights have been managed by The Stratford-upon-Avon Christmas Lights Company Ltd since 2001, an independent company of non-fee charging volunteers who work solely for the town and its people and are responsible for all fund-raising, marketing, engineering and planning. We are continually investigating new designs and layouts to “ring the changes” and we are proud of what we do to make the town look so welcoming during the Christmas/New Year season.

Costs and Funding
The cost of the town’s Christmas lights display is funded by grants and donations covering erection, removal, power, insurance, storage and replacements and includes a sum of £10,000 pa for maintenance of the fixtures, fittings, wiring and health and safety aspects of portable appliance testing. We are, therefore, totally reliant upon the very generous grants from the Town Council and the Town Trust for without them the lights would not exist. Although these grants cover the majority of the costs, there is a shortfall to which, each year, we strive to encourage the town’s business sector to contribute (of which only about 10% do), and we are eternally grateful for the generous donations made by members of the public.
The Town Council and Trust grants are, however, not guaranteed for the future so the annual display of lights at Christmastime is under considerable threat.
As an example, the majority of the cost would be covered if each of the town centre’s 600 or so businesses could be prevailed upon to donate the sum of £150 each year, with the multiples contributing a little more, thereby guaranteeing the continuation of these displays. It is, after all, these businesses which benefit the most from the extra revenue from shoppers brought into town by the lights.
